The vine-growing areas of Twickel Wine Estate are situated in theSzekszárd wine-producing area, one of Hungary’s most traditional wine-growingregions. With its vineyards of 2,300 hectares, Szekszárd may be one of thesmaller wine-growing regions in Europe; however, historically speaking, it isdefinitely among the most important ones on the Continent.

    In the late 19th century Kadarka of Szekszárd was the quintessence oftop quality red wines and, during the phylloxera plague in France, Szekszárdwines were imported by the French in large quantities as only this red winesatisfied the sophisticated French palate.

    Interestingly, this is one of the fewwine regions in Europe that were largely spared by the destruction ofphylloxera.

    Unfortunately, the world forgot about the region, although the words ofFranz Liszt, a great admirer of Szekszárd wines, who wrote in a letter 150years ago, “I will take every opportunity to praise the perfection of Szekszárdwines and help its popularity” and the opinion of Pope Pious IX, who wroteabout the Szekszárd wine in 1865, “I can only preserve my intact temper andhealth with this wine” are still valid today.

Climate andcharacteristics:

    The uniqueness of the region is mainlythe result of the climate and the soil. The long winter and the extreme but drysummer, coupled with the very thick layers of loess provide ideal conditionsfor grape-growing.

    The elements of Atlantic, Mediterraneanand Continental impacts influencing the weather in Hungary all meet in thisarea, which is open to the East, thus the warm Continental currents move freelyand shape a unique climate.

    As for the structure of the soil, thereis sand, clay and forest soil with broken stone under the thick layers ofloess, some of which reach a thickness of up to 30 metres. This complex soillends Szekszárd wines their rich spiciness, diverse aromas and characteristic,harmonic acids.

        Our vineyards are situated in the bestlocations of the wine region. The Wine Estate only processes grapes originatingfrom these excellent locations, well aware that the quality of wine is decidedon the vineyard already. During the wine-making processes, traditional methodsare blended with the most modern technology. Thus the character of the wineregion and the grape types can be preserved in the wine. The driving principleis that the life of the wine should be interfered as little as possible as thewine develops. Treating the wine, it is regarded as an essential task to retainthe natural flavors provided by the grapes.

    75% of the area consists of bluegrapes, most of which is constituted by Merlot, Kékfrankos, Kadarka, CabernetSauvignon and Cabernet Franc types, followed by Pinot Noir, Portugieser andSyrah. The rest of the area grows white grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Rhine Rieslingand Olaszrizling.

    Roots are determiningin one’s life. Old noble families and their offspring feel it important toreturn to their ancient homeland. One of them is Baron György Twickel.

His father, Baron Clemens Twickel, whooriginated from Northern Rhine-Westphalia, was looking for and finally foundinvestment opportunities in Hungary in 1993. Twickel Wine Estate is the part ofthat investment, the Szekszárd Zrt.

Today Szekszárd Zrt. is managed by the heir Baron György Twickelas the sole proprietor. His commitment to increase quality managed to make theTwickel Wine Estate one of the most modern wine-making facilities in Hungary,now acknowledged among the top wineries of the country.
